Good luck. This course will teach you everything you need to know to make full use of the world's most popular graphics editing program - Adobe Photoshop. Avoid the "For Dummies" books at all costs - they're waaaaaaaaay behind the times and in desperate need of a redesign overhaul.

The "Bible" series of books aren't as good as they used to be (they're just expanded manuals now), so I'd recommend looking at the "Wow!" and "Down & Dirty Tricks" books as well as the "Visual Quickstart Guides", the latter are fairly inexpensive, making them good values.

Photoshop is a very powerful tool and it's easy to get overwhelmed or not use it to it's fullest. ImageReady is harder to use than Macromedia Fireworks, but even Fireworks seems funky cuz I'm used to years of PS usage. The only thing I don't like is it's web graphics handling for rollovers and stuff. As a former typographer, it's terrific! This page lists the new stuff in PS7, so check it out. I think that's when they allowed Type to be directly entered onto the canvas, instead of using a dialouge box - this allows you to edit, kern and otherwise pound on the type like you could in Illustrator. PS 6 added Layer Effect which made drop shadows, embossing and about a dozen other FX editable at any time - very helpful. without having to act on the actual pixels - screw something up, just toss the layer and start again. I think 5.5 brought Adjustment Layers which allow you to tweak color balances, etc. I've had (legal version - neener!) PS 4.0, 5.5, 6.0 and 7.0 and ever step added something cool. Click to expand. There are MASSIVE differences, but many of the basic concepts (color handling and editing) remain the same.
